How to safely run with your pet

Exercising with your pet together is one of the best ways to bond with them. You get to enjoy your pet’s companionship and fresh air at the same time. How awesome is that! Today, we are going to talk about how to run with your pet.
First you will need to do is to check your pet’s health; it is very important to ensure your pet is in good health. You can schedule a visit with your vet to get a comprehensive check-up. They will also advise you on appropriate distances and intensity levels for your pet’s age, breed, and size.
Now let’s get to the training! Pets are just like us, they also need time to build up their endurance and fitness level, so please start slowly and be patient! Start with short walks and gradually transition to jogging. This will allow your pet’s muscles and joints to adapt to the new exercise routine. Over time, you can increase the distance and pace. Another tip is to always pay attention to your pet's cues!
You also need to invest in proper gear for your pet. Avoid using retractable leashes as they can be dangerous to your pet during jogging. You can invest in a well-fitted harness for your dogs or cats; that way they won’t strain their neck during the run. The best option for you is to get a hand-free leash designed for running, that way you can give you and your pet more freedom and comfort. You can also check out our hands-free leash sets: Hands-free Bungee Leash – Omni Pet Club ™ and Hands-free Emergency Handle Leash – Omni Pet Club ™. You attach the hands-free belt around your waist, that way you don’t have to hold the leash while you run.
Don’t forget to warm-up and cool down. Just like us, pets also benefit from warm-up and cool down exercise. Start with a few minutes of walking to allow your pet’s muscles to warm up before picking up the pace. After the run, gradually decrease the intensity and finish with a walk to help their muscles cool down and prevent stiffness.
Always remember to stay hydrated - yourself and your pet. You can carry a travel water bowl or a bottle of water to keep your pet hydrated during the run. Especially on hot days, you will need to make sure your pet stays hydrated to prevent heat illness. Plan your exercise during cooler hours or shaded routes during hot days.
Another thing that people tend to overlook is the running surface. We have sneakers protect our feet; however, our pets don’t have that for protection. We will need to choose the right running surfaces like grass or dirt paths; they are gentle for your pet’s paws and joints. Please avoid running on hot asphalt or concrete, which can burn their paws. Choose routes that are safe and enjoyable for yourself and your pet. Parks, nature trails , or green belts are always good choices and stay away from heavy traffic. Another tip is to always be mindful along the route to avoid broken glass, sharp rocks, or any other hazards to prevent unnecessary injuries.
Your pet communicates through body language, so it's essential to be observant during your runs. Pay attention on their body language If they seem fatigued or slow down, take a break. Watch out for signs of discomfort, excessive panting, or limping, and stop the run if needed. Always put your pet's well-being first.
Have fun! You can explore new areas with your furry friend together! Just make sure to do your research to make sure your new adventure destinations are pet- friendly. Running with them is not just about exercise; it is also about spending quality time together. You get to engage with them and strengthen your bond with your pet. Happy running and cheers!
